Back in 1972, a group of classical music enthusiasts started an informal association to bring to Montreal leading artistes from India to perform. Those who took an active role in organizing and funding these concerts included Kasi Anantha, A. Krishnan, Vijay Mathur, Dr.N.P.V. Nair, Dr.V. Seshadri, Dr.Bobby Srinivasan and Dr.M.N.S. Swamy.

The first concert was held in 1972 in which Eamni Sankara Sastry performed on the Veena accompanied by Trichy Sankaran. The following year, T.N. Krishnan gave Violin concert accompanied by Trichy Sankaran & Viji Krishnan. In 1974 M.S. Gopalakrishnan gave two concerts playing Violin in Carnatic style accompanied by Trichy Sankaran and in Hindustani style accompanied by Narendra Verma. M.S.G.’s North American tour of 24 concerts were sponsored by A. Krishnan & K. Anantha. In 1976 the North American tour by M.L. Vasanthakumari and other leading artistes were sponsored by A. Krishnan, K. Anantha, Dr. Nair, Dr. Seshadri & Dr. Srinivasan in collaboration with CMANA. The success of this event led to the birth of the Bharatiya Sangeetha Sangham in 1978.

Bharatiya Sangeetha Sangham was incorporated in 1979 as a non-profit cultural organization. Although the Sangham’s constitution includes a wide range of cultural activities, its primary focus has been the promotion of classical music & dance of India.
