Krishna Leela - Bharata Natya Dance Drama
The dance performance... was one of the best.
The first part was a short music concert by Kuldip Pai, who is a Tulu
speaking person from Kerala. He started with a Tamil song, then one
in Kannada, and one in Hindi. The second part were conventional
dance pieces. Mr. Pai had a voice and pronunciation of Tamil,
which were superb and pleasant to hear. The third was Krishna Leela,
Mahabharata story. The story is the usual one. But the dances and the
songs made it a new unique enjoyable episode. Most songs were composed
by Muralidharan and were in sweet Azhvaar style Tamil. Little girl
Kavya's performance got all eyes glued to her, all the time.
The literary talent of Muralidaran might be getting unnoticed by
most dance music appreciative audience. The words used in each item
had the mood built in, along with rhyme and rhythm. Not easy for a composer.

Thyagaraja Day
Congratulations to the BSS Committee for a well-organized Sri Thyagaraja Day on the March 24, 2007. The krithi renderings by the kids and the adolescents were particularly very good. The credit goes to their music teachers who were able to get the best out of them.

I do, too, want to join the chorus of praises for the wonderful violin concert. Personally, it was one of the rare concerts where I'd a total musical experience with all its beauty, complexity, and grandeur that approached transcendence. I thank you and all other organizing members of BSS for making this possible.

I would like to thank and congratulate you and your organization for the
tremendous support that you have extended to the artiste (Priyadarsini Govind)
and for your excellent organizational skills. You are one of the few highly
professional cultural organizations and that itself is a welcome change for
visiting artistes. I commend you for your professionalism and look forward
to working with you in the future.

I would just like to say what a great and memorable program the dance drama was. It was very captivating , not only in the dramatic aspect but also in the music aspect. I thoroughly enjoyed "Annammayya". My heartfelt congratulations to the BSS committee members for having worked so hard to bring this to Montreal and to have attracted such a large number of people. BRAVO! The Nadaswaram concert was also excellent. Thank you all once again and keep up the good work!

A year ago we sat transfixed by the depth and beauty of Abhyaasa. When Jag told us about another dance drama coming, we couldn't say Yes fast enough. "Annamayya" drew us in again and enchanted us. Thank you once again for bringing such art to Montreal. We are in your debt.

I really enjoyed the "Annamayya" performance. I found the explanations of the dances to give a lot of insight so that I could follow the story (since I don't understand the language of the songs). I especially enjoyed the girl Bharata Natyam dancer (Kalyani Suresh - ed) Wow!! at such a young age, such fluid motion! Also the male dancer (L. Narendra Kumar - ed) imitating the animals was excellent. Time seemed to pass by unnoticed at this concert, and my attention seemed to be on nothing but the show. At the end I just sat there for about 15 minutes watching the people file out, almost as if that was part of the show as well - looking at all of the glowing faces. I'm glad that the Sangham took on the challenge of bringing such a large group, and would surely go and see another concert like this again.

Originally only my wife Vidya was planning to attend "Annamayya" dance-drama of Dr.Balamurali & party. I am glad I changed my mind and attended the program. Though I did not understand a word of Telugu, I did enjoy the program thoroughly. I am glad the Bharatiya Sangeetha Sangham organized it and the response from the audiences in Montreal was very good. Though every artiste was very good in their own role, I must congratulate the young man (L. Narendra Kumar - ed) who played as Hanuman, serpent and Lord Ganesha which was really superb. Please congratulate him on our behalf.

I attended the concert given by Sheik Subhani Mahaboob & Smt. Khaleeshabi Mahaboob at Concordia Hall on the 15th April 2000, organized by BSS. The concert went on for 4 hours and I was delighted to hear such mastery over Nadaswaram by these two artistes. The Tavil players exhibited mastery over rhythm. It is very rare to hear a Nadaswaram concert in this part of the World. Congratulations for bringing such a quality program to our town.

It (O.S. Thiagarajan's) was a very good concert and thank you for taking all the trouble for arranging the same. Notwithstanding some problems of parking, this hall (Biblioth?que) is ideal for big concerts like the one above. Bravo !

The program ' Abhyaasa' was well choreo-graphed and the selection of artists was excellent. The theme was superb and the audience cheered every minute. Many such programs are needed for Montreal Indian community. If the seating is limited, why not arrange 2 shows on consecutive days (preferably weekends) so that all can benefit. The executives should give some short speeches during the event. Keep it up !

ABHYAASA - AN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE.
Well suited for any type of audience. It was unique. We traveled back a century with Guru Adyar Lakshman and witnessed the discipline, devotion and dedication of his students in the performing art of Bharatha Natyam. Each and every one who performed stole the show. The kavuthuvam by Narendra, the portrayal of Meenakshi by Mahalakshmi and Shiva by Joy are still dancing in our minds.
The romantic scene of Meenakshi and Shiva (performed by Mahalakshmi and Joy), was the piece-de-resistance of the evening. Mahalakshmi showed `Naanam (shyness), beautifully. The choreography of this romantic scene was superb and could beat any other romantic scene of the world.
A video cassette of Abhyaasa will help young dancers to improve in Abhinaya. Will it be possible?

Abhyaasa - what a magical and exhilarating experience. Improvisations such as those seen on stage last Friday are so rare and one can understand why - only extremely competent and self confident dancers can improvise in the presence of other dancers!! The perfect rapport between the dancers and the musicians no doubt contributed to the feeling of pure joy we witnesed on the faces of all performers. I hope the BSS will continue to bring us more high caliber programs like Abhyaasa.
Congratulations!!

Abhyaasa portrayed the Gurukulam with meticulous precision. It was as though they had reached out to us and taken us back to the Gurukulam. It was a wonderful and exhilarating journey and I hope to see them again.
Congratulations to Bharatiya Sangeetha Sangham for an excellent program selection.

The Abhyaasa show was inspiring to music & dance abhyaasees alike. Hope to see more such programs with full halls. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for all the people in the executive, who had put in a lot of work & put-up with a lot of nervous moments to make the show happen.

Thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you again for telling us about Abhyaasa. It was one of those experiences that we'll have right up at the top among our never-to-be-forgotten ones such as driving across Vancouver Island in a fairyland of deep snow and frost covering trees and mountains and white mists rising off the lakes, all in total silence and alone.
The dancing last night was so emotionally evocative there was no need to know every detail to understand the story and the colours were just dazzling. The music, too, was easy to follow and the skill of the violinist and flautist following the singer's elaborate lines so finely was an experience in itself.
Bing and I agreed we had the best seats in the house, for once the virtue of getting lost and arriving at the last moment. Thank you again.
